What Are Asthma Triggers ?
It is not clear exactly what makes the airways of people with asthma inflamed in the first place.
What is it that "triggers" their bodies to overreact?
Our inflamed airways may be due to a combination of factors. We know that if other people in our family have asthma, we are more likely to develop it.
New research suggests that being exposed to things like tobacco smoke, infections, and some allergens early in our life may increase our chances of developing asthma.
There are things in the environment that may provoke our asthma symptoms and lead to asthma attacks. These irritants, conditions or activities are referred to as asthma triggers.
Some of the more common triggers include exercise, allergens, irritants, and viral infections.
Some people have asthma only when they exercise or have a viral infection.
The list below gives some examples of triggers that can bring on asthma symptoms.
ALLERGENS
Allergens are substances that can cause you to have an allergic reaction. That is, in some people, the immune system sees them as "foreign" and reacts in an exaggerated way to protect the body against them.
Some of the most common allergens include:
* Animal dander - scales or dried saliva from the skin, hair, or feathers of animals
* Dust mites - tiny bugs that thrive in mattresses, upholstered furniture, carpets, stuffed animals, as well as contained in house dust
* Cockroaches - and cockroach droppings
* Pollen from trees and grass
* Molds, both indoor and outdoor

IRRITANTS
Irritants are things in the environment that may irritate your lungs. Those irritants which are amongst the leading causes of asthma include:
* Cigarette smoke
* Air pollution, including ozone
* Cold air or changes in weather, like freezing temperatures, high humidity, and thunderstorms
* Strong odors or sprays, such as perfumes, household cleaners, cooking fumes - especially from frying - paints, or varnishes
* Scented products
OTHERS
Other asthma triggers may include:
* Exercise
* Respiratory infections, such as colds or viral pneumonia. Also sinusitis and rhinitis.
* Medicines such as aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) like ibuprofen, and beta-blockers,
which are used in high blood pressure and glaucoma medicines
* Sulfites in food (dried fruit, processed potatoes, or shrimp)) or beverages (wine or beer)
* A medical condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) that causes heartburn and can worsen asthma symptoms, especially at night
* Irritants or allergens that you may be exposed to at your work, such as special chemicals or dusts
* Strong emotional expression (including crying or laughing hard) and stress
* Infections
This is not a complete list of the asthma triggers that may provoke asthma symptoms, rather, it includes only the more common ones. In addition, people may have trouble with one or more of these.
It is important for you to learn which ones are problematic for you. Your doctor can help you identify which things affect your asthma and suggest ways to avoid them.
